Using Aromatherapy to Improve Concentration

Everyone already knows about the benefits of aromatherapy for reasons such as relaxation and improving the quality of sleep, but did you know that you can also use aromatherapy to work in the opposite way – to wake you up, revitalize you and improve your levels of concentration.

Unlike other methods, aromatherapy works because the sense of smell is closely related to the workings of the brain, which is why certain smells affect you so much. The scent of certain fragrances can wake you up and improve your concentration a lot quicker than drinking a couple of cups of coffee!

If you are looking for the right essential oils to use in aromatherapy, especially if you are using them to improve levels of concentration, then there are a number of different ones that you can use.

First of all, lemon is always a very refreshing smell and citrus is renowned for revitalisation. Lemon essential oils are a great scent, not only for its benefits on the mind and body, but also because it is a lovely, fresh fragrance.

Other essential oils that you can use, either alone or combined are – mango, pine, apple, peppermint, rosemary and eucalyptus oil. They all have their own properties and benefits, but they are all very good for improving concentration.

Mango helps to ease depression, which is one of the major causes of lack of concentration, and pine can help to increase both energy and concentration together. Apple essential oils work in the same way as the pine essential oils, by improving alertness and energy levels, meaning that you will get more work completed. Rosemary is quite a unique essential oil as it can both relax the body and wake it up at the same time! Peppermint has been proven to improve alertness and concentration levels over longer periods of time, so if you have a lot of work to complete, or are holding a study session, peppermint oil is a definite winner!

Eucalyptus has many properties, and as well as improving concentration it has a lovely fragrance that is both refreshing and revitalizing.

There are plenty of ways in which you can use your essential oils to improve concentration, and it all depends on the type of environment you are in, and what you are doing. First of all, you can get oil burners that warm the essential oils in the top with a small tea light candle at the bottom. When the candle burns, the oil heats up and the fragrance is diffused throughout the room. However, if you are at work or other similar places you may not be able to do this. You can mix the essential oils in with a non-perfumed moisturizer and rub this into your skin or on your chest so you can smell it no matter where you are. Another way in which you can use essential oils, is to buy perfume or scented body mists of the fragrance itself.
