There are a lot of unique uses for aromatherapy oils, many of which I’m sure you have never thought of. After reading some of these and knowing how much some of this stuff goes for in stores, it makes sense, dollars and cents that is, to make some of this stuff yourself. In addition to having the products you love, you’ll be getting the benefits from the essential oils as well.
You can make your own body powders with little effort. The basis of most body powders on the market is talcum. But there are many people who are allergic to talc, so all these recipes have a base of cornstarch. Cornstarch has a natural cooling affect on the skin and it is hypoallergenic. You can mix 60 drops of any oil to every ¼ cup of cornstarch. Some of the most popular scents for powders are the floral scents such as rose, jasmine oil, neroli or a blend of these. Men can also use these powder blends simply by adding the spicy scents such as sandalwood, bergamot, pine, spruce, cypress or a blend of any of these.
You can even use this for babies by adding just 10 drops of essential oil to every ¼ cup of cornstarch. The best oils to use for babies are lavender, rose oil and rosewood. Babies are much more sensitive to aromatherapy, so the powder for them shouldn’t be as strong. Lavender is a great essential oil to use for babies because it is calming and it is also antibacterial, antiviral, and soothing to skin. You could also mix the same essential oils in the same ratio with a lightweight carrier oil to make baby oil. Occasionally babies get little rashes or skin irritations. You can take the same lavender baby oil, heat it in a double boiler and add small pieces of beeswax to it. Stir well to ensure that all the oil and wax is mixed and once it has reached the desired consistency, pour into a glass jar with a tight fitting lid and let it cool. What you have now is a completely natural baby ointment that is suitable for treating diaper rash or baby eczema.
You can use essential oils to scent your unscented candles as well. You can rub your favorite essential oils or oil blend onto the outside of your taper or votive candles. For the larger pillar candles, heat up an ice pick or metal skewer and poke holes in the candle, parallel to the wick. You can then add your essential oils and the scent will disperse as the candle burns. Be careful not to get the oil on or near the wick as this can be a hazard.
