Vanilla Oil

Pure Vanilla essential oil is solvent extracted from the ‘cured’ pods or beans of Vanilla planifolia a creeper with trumpet-shaped white flowers. It is also known as common Vanilla, meaning ‘little pod’. Native to Mexico, it is mainly cultivated in Madagascar, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Tahiti, Reunion, East Africa, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, West Indies, Central and South America.

Traditionally used as an ingredient in Oriental perfumes, 100 % genuine Vanilla oil is a orange- brown viscous liquid with a rich, warm, sweet, smooth balsamic aroma that has a soothing and harmonizing effect. One of the main constituent, ‘Vanillin’ hydroxybenzaldehyde is chiefly responsible for the unique fragrance and typical flavour of vanilla. The main chemical components of Vanilla essential oil are Vanillin Hydroxybenzaldehyde, Isobutyric Acid, Eugenol, Caproic Acid, Ethyl Alcohol, Acetic Acid, Cinnamate, Furfural and Vanillyl Ethyl Acid.

Vanilla oil provides relief from anxiety & stress, fights depression & uplifts mood, reduces fever, sedates inflammation & nervous afflictions, repairs damages due to oxidation, improves digestion & appetite, enhances libido & promotes arousal, inhibits growth of cancerous cells and promotes sleep.

Vanilla is the only edible orchid in the world, very popular for its delightful taste and pleasant aroma. It is widely used as a flavouring agent in foods, culinary, beverages, medicines, cosmetics and perfumery. Although many food products like cakes, biscuits, chocolates, ice-creams, desserts etc. are flavoured with ‘Vanilla’, they often use artificial substitutes.

Vanilla essential oil is not normally used in aromatherapy. It is non-toxic, however use moderately for skin care and during pregnancy. Recommended storage includes dark amber, blue or green glass bottles, as it dissolves in aluminum bottles.
